If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.

The Most Gorgeous Hand Knit Socks: A Gallery Display
Come in & see our gorgeous display of socks hand knit by IRIS guests. Vote on your favorite pair of socks.
Want to have your socks be part of the display?
Bring your pair(s) of socks to IRIS by Friday September 28. Label your socks: your first name, phone number, needle size used, yarn used, pattern used and a statement describing why your socks are exceptional. We’ll display them through October 31. Pick up your socks the first part of November. We’ll ask customers to pick their favorite pair in a range of categories and award gift certificates to the winners.
Categories: Lace, ribbed, sport, socks to sleep in, “I’ve only ever knit 1 1/2 socks” (yes, bring in your 1 1/2 socks and left over yarn attached), knee high and over the knee, Fair Isle, art socks, socks for kids. We’ll develop additional categories when needed.
Speed Knitting Contest
Ever wonder which knitting technique is the fastest? Well, here is our chance to test out our theories. And have lots of fun.
Contest format: Contestants will be given 10 minutes to cast on and knit 60 stitches in the round. The winner will be determined by total number of rows knit.
Register by Friday October 19. Contest date: Tuesday October 23, 7 pm to 8:15 pm. The knitting contest will start at 7:30. Refreshments will be served.
Materials: Bring a pair of # 3 knitting needles; double points or circulars of your choice. Contestants will receive a 100 gram skein of Online Supersocker 100 sock yarn as a gift from IRIS and use this yarn for the contest.
Charity Knitting: Children in Common Socks
Children In Common is a charitable program of Adoptions Together, Inc. This non profit supports over 700,000 children in 14 orphanages in Russia and Lithuania. The orphanages receive enough government aid to supply the children with poorly nutritious food and the minimum of clothing. They live in old buildings which have fallen into disrepair and have no bathing facilities. They are “bathed” once a week with cold water or they are walked to the local bath house.
Details
Materials: use your own pattern or free pattern enclosed; worsted weight yarn 80% or more wool. The children sleep in the socks and use them as house shoes during the day.
Bring completed socks to IRIS by December 31.
Target: 150 pairs of socks
Make a pair of socks; bring them to IRIS by December 31.
IRIS encourages you to use left over yarns to make socks for 4 to 16 year olds for this wonderful charity. Children in Common was selected to be included in Knitting for Peace, the well received and comprehensive guide for knitters about charity knitting.
Make a pair of socks, bring them to IRIS by December 31. Use your left over yarns. We have inexpensive patterns at IRIS or go on line to find free patterns.
We’ll send your socks to Children in Common for distribution in Russia and Lithuania.
