2007-08 Fall/Winter/Spring Class Schedule
Join us to learn new techniques and how to plan and finish projects so that they fit and look absolutely beautiful. Please note that some September classes are at the end of the schedule.
General Information
We limit enrollment in our regular classes to four students. If you need to cancel your registration, we will refund your registration fee if you are able to inform us two weeks prior to the beginning of the class. If we have to cancel class due to teacher illness or weather, we will contact you and provide a make-up class. Registration generally does not include cost of materials. Classes are located at IRIS unless otherwise specified. Note the class dates on your calendar.
Do you need an individualized class set-up?
Let us know what you need. We can come to your home, create a class for children, work with individuals with special needs, set up a class for your group or for your specific interests and provide private lessons.
Beginner Knitting Skills
Description: Knitting is a relaxing and beautiful craft, dating back to the 14th century in Egypt and is enjoyed around the world. In this beginning class, you will learn all the basic skills needed to make simple garments: cast-on, cast-off, knit, purl & combine stitches. Learn to determine gauge, pick up dropped stitches, read yarn labels, the characteristics and care of knitted garments made from animal & plant fibers.
Project: Choose a simple project at last class.
Materials: One skein of lightly colored tightly plied worsted weight wool yarn (gift from IRIS) and size 8 24" circular bamboo knitting needles.
Cost: $58 (Total 8 hours)

Description: This class is for anyone who needs some review of basic knitting skills including how to pick up stitches, decrease, increase, cast on, cast off, and sewing together a finished project. Do you want to start a project and feel unsure about how to select a pattern and yarn?.

Description: This class is for those who have, in the past, finished a garment and have basic finish skills. However the knitter may want to "tweak" their finishing techniques, learn some new tips, and make garments look "handmade", not "homemade".

Hooked on Knitting – Crochet for Knitters $60 or 2 or more @ $55

Description: It's not necessary to learn or to know how to crochet ALL types of stitches or make a completely crocheted garment to use these techniques. We'll basically be talking about and learning how to slip stitches, chain and do single crochet to show off our knitting and to use as a tool in knit construction.

Reading Japanese Style Patterns $40

Introduction to Felting for Knitters: The Lucy Bag $58

Description: Learn to how to make the popular felted Lucy Bag and skills needed for other knitted projects including how to read a pattern, knit in the round and with double pointed and circular needles, choose yarns appropriate for felting and how to felt knitted fabrics.
Materials: 3 skeins worsted weight wool yarn, pattern, stitch markers, size 10. 24" circular knitting needle & double pointed knitting needles.

Finishing Skills for Knitted Projects $40

Description: Learn to finish knitted projects using short rows and a 3-needle bind-off, sew a seam invisibly and pick up stitches, graft bound off stitches to rows and the sleeves to the body of the sweater.
You will learn more advanced techniques including how to attach a vertical ribbing with 2 buttonholes, tapestry cast on and cast off, a stretchy sewn cast off and to graft live stitches to rows.
Materials: The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques by Nancy Wiseman. Home work will be assigned at the first class including knitting several swatches for practicing.

Introduction to Shadow Knitting $58

Description: Discover the mysteries of shadow knitting—a simple technique of alternating rows of dark and light yarn to produce a subtle patterning that appears and disappears depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Learn the basic principles and techniques of shadow knitting, an approach to knitting that can be used to make spectacular shawls, bags, scarves, and sweaters.

Modular Knitting: The Beauty of Geometrics $58

Description: Modular knitting is a technique of short rows can create beautiful, complex-looking garments and accessories out of a repeating series of geometric knitted shapes. Other methods of modular knitting require the knitter to continually bind off, cut the yarn, and add new modules to a work-in-progress by picking up stitches from the previously knitted module.

My First Pair of Mittens on Double Pointed Needles: Advanced Beginners $58

Description: Learn to make a beautiful basic pair of mittens and the following skills: ribbing, increasing, decreasing, knitting in the round. Learn to choose materials appropriate for the project by interpreting yarn label information.

Introduction to Aran Knitting $58

Description: Knit a beautiful hat using traditional Aran stitch patterns. Aran knitting originated in the Aran islands off the west coast of Ireland and is characterized by intricately patterned sweaters that involve lots of cables, bobbles and other designs. Woman of the islands began to knit these sweaters in the early 1900s using wool in natural colors.
Project: Aran Hat
Materials: pattern, 170 yards heavy worsted wool yarn (4 st/in), size 4 and 6 single point needles, tapestry needle.
Knitting Top-Down Sweaters $58

Description: This class will introduce you to the pleasure of top down knitting. Using circular needles and beginning at the neck, you have little or no finishing after completing the cast off row. The Lillie sweater can be made in size 0-6 to 36 months. You'll learn to knit with circular needles, combine stockinette with garter stitch, make button holes and work with cotton blends.

Materials: 400 to 520 yards of worsted weight yarn (4.5 sts/in), size 7 24" circular needle and double pointed needles, 3 ½ to ¾" buttons, stitch markers, pattern.
Designing & Knitting Lace $65

Description: The ancient art of lace knitting is no longer just about dollies and tablecloths. Contemporary knitters are rediscovering and its broad range of applications. In this class we will learn to read lace charts, master 3 specific lace patterns from a stitch dictionary and design a scarf, baby blanket or afghan.
Project: Lace scarf.
Materials: DK or lace weight yarn, needles correct to yarn choice, Vogue Knitting Stitchionary or other stitch pattern book including lace.
