The Health Benefits of Knitting

No news to us…but always terrific to have a world class newspaper announce it to the whole world!

Jane E. Brody’s piece, published January 25, in The New York Times, beautifully describes and documents the evidence that knitting is indeed good for us. Knitting and crocheting involve repeated movements, a positive sensory experience, satisfaction from making something beautiful, social engagement and cognitive complexity, and therefore are ideal activities across the lifespan. Here is Ms. Brody’s list of specifics…and I bet you might have some to add from your own experience.

Increases sense of happiness, relaxation, focus on the ‘here and now’, purpose, meaningfulness, sense of order during chaotic periods,

Decreases/lowers awareness of pain, social isolation, heart rate and blood pressure, levels of stress hormone cortisol, mild memory loss and cognitive impairment.

Thanks, Ms. Brody! Click here to read the article.
